01992 Oldsmobile Achieva SC Test Drive
With fortunes fallen very low, Olds overhauled its Cutlass Calais for 1992 and called it Achieva. The new 2- and 4-door sedans rode the same 103.4-inch wheelbase and had similar interior dimensions as Calais, but the Achieva’s body was eight inches longer overall. The new model was based on the front-wheel-drive platform used by the Chevrolet Beretta and Corsica, which was also used for the new Pontiac Grand Am and Buick Skylark. All Achievas had standard analog instrumentation that included a tachometer. Seating for five was standard and the driver’s bucket had an adjustable lumbar support. Airbags were not offered initially. But ABS was. In fact anti-lock brakes were standard on all Achieva models. The new car was offered in three trim levels: the 2-door coupe came in base S form, as the SC, and in plusher SL, guise. The four door sedan was available in S, and SL dress. Later in the year, Oldsmobile offered a special SCX model to replace 1991’s performance oriented Quad 442. Besides ABS, all Achievas were standard with power steering, remote trunk and fuel filler releases, and automatic door locks. Sedans also came with child security rear door locks. Cars with automatic transmissions got an interlock that prevented them from being shifted out of park unless the brake was applied.
