1997 Mitsubishi Diamante Test Drive
It takes something special to set a car apart from the tangle of luxury sedan offerings. Mitsubishi was a standout with its new 1997 Diamante. After a ground-up redo, the Diamante was wrapped with striking styling inside and out. And there was a secret weapon under the hood: a comparatively huge 3.5-liter V-6 that generated 210 horsepower and a prodigious amount of torque. This new standard engine gave the Diamante new-found excitement. With a herd of rivals running little 3.0-liter poppers, the Diamante’s mill was one of the big guns. Two trim levels were offered on the now-Australian built Diamante: the nicely equipped ES, and the leather-and wood-laden LS.
