The Mercedes-Benz SLK230 probably did the best job in the line of bridging the gap between daily commuting and twisty backroad excitement. Its handling was above reproach (it slalomed even faster than the C5 Corvette), and it could pull 0.89 lateral g on the skidpad. A 2.3-liter/191-horsepower supercharged inline four teamed up with a five-speed automatic to deliver quick 6.9-second 0-60-mph acceleration, with minimal noise and vibration. A leather interior with carbon-fiber-look accents featured side airbags and rollover protection plus the touch of a button transformed it into a steel-topped glass-windowed coupe.
