During the summer of 1998, a transformation took place at Suzuki dealers.  With a toot of the horn and a swirl of dust, the Sidekick (and the X-90 wacky/ute) drove off into the sunset, to be replaced with the new Vitara line of compact sport utility vehicles.  There were three principle versions: the two-door and four-door Vitara came with either a 1.6-liter/97-horsepower SOHC inline four (rear-drive versions) or a 2.0-liter/127-horsepower DOHC inline four (rear- or flour-wheel-drive variants). The line-topper was the Grand Vitara, which had a 2.5-liter/155-horsepower DOHC V-6 under the hood.  Chevrolet sold a version of the same basic vehicle called the Tracker, but didn’t offer the V-6.
