The fourth generation Honda Civic range, that debuted in 1988, was expected to include a mid-engined sportster. With its more muscular look, the top-of-the-range Civic would have been powered by the 16 valve 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine that was employed in the Acura Integra, and would have been blessed with a great power-to-weight ratio. The styling showed strong Pininfarina influence, with the 1984 Honda HP-X Turin Show car’s nose and a Testarossatail. Production cars were being developed with significant input from Honda’s US design studio, responsible for the original Civic concept. Rumors had it this fresh MR2 competitor was not the only mid-engined Honda under consideration.
