1989: Mazda’s Monster Coupe

Mazda was considering marketing its high-performance coupe in the North American Market potentially naming it RX-9, or keeping its homeland nomenclature of Cosmo.  It was expected to become the company’s flagship and its most expensive offering. The coupe would be powered by the 20B-REW turbocharged triple rotary engine developing 300 bhp, to the rear wheels. The rear suspension was the same E-link layout used on the contemporary 929. Equipped with four bucket seats, the coupe measured 190 inches in length, roughly the size of a Ford Taurus of the time.

Styling would have been orthodox but assertive, meant to appeal to American customer.  A less expensive version fitted with a 3.0 liter 24-valve, 190 hp V6 was also expected to be offered.
The car never made it to the states, but the 1990 Cosmo was sold through Mazda’s upscale Eunos distribution, similar but not identical to the image shown here, through the 1996 model year.z6ma

The popular theory is the Cosmo would have come to the U.S. as part of Mazda’s stillborn Amati luxury brand.
