11992: A Catera with AWD?
It was 1992. Cadillac began serious consideration for a model smaller than the Seville, one that was aimed squarely at imports like Infiniti’s J30, Lexus ES300, and Acura’s Legend.
Early on it was settled and Cadillac would share the basic structure with the next generation Opel Omega.
Introduced in late 1993, the Omega was a rear-wheel-drive intermediate sedan alternative to the Mercedes 300 and BMW 5-series.
Also planned was a 1995 full-size Saab variant. Since the Swedes were developing an intelligent on-demand four-wheel-drive system for high performance versions of their car, Cadillac could have theoretically tapped into that know-how.
Originally planned as the $25,000 price leader, and since the Northstar V-8 was too heavy and powerful for the car, Cadillac’s alternative was said to be familiar sounding 3.5-liter Northstar V-6 that was eventually launched by the end of the decade in the Oldsmobile Intrigue. Instead, as we know we received the English 3.0L V-6 that put out a modest 200-hp.
