1992: Major Revisions to the 1994 Chevrolet Caprice
Chevrolet began a gradual styling transformation of the controversial Caprice Classic starting with the 1993 model year.
Critics have disagreed over the success of the Caprice’s ‘all-new’ exterior. Some contended the sedan’s rear quarters, especially with the “skirted look” of closed rear wheel openings appeared ungainly at some angles.
The ’93 Caprice featured open rear wheelwells, reducing the wide expanse of rear quarter metal and lowering the cars cholesterol count. Also included with the update, the taillights and license plate openings recieved chrome trim.
More serious changes were budgeted for the 1994 model year. A new tail that could have brought a fresher lighting scheme. The new taillights and turn indicators would wrap the corners more demurely, and a lighted full width panel connecting the left and right modules were also in the cards. The side marker lights were also to be relocated to the quarter panel. A slightly more formal roofline would incorporate s significant backlight glass area, wrapping into the sail panel aft of the modified rear doors, possibly offering additional head room, as well.
